I payed for the basic double room but as the VIP suites were empty, I was upgraded at no extra cost (I understand this is fairly common at Kim Lan Hotel). If you are a photographer this is an opportunity not to be missed. These range from a few hours to half a day, depending on how much of the region you would like to see. It's worth taking earplugs for the trip if you want to get some rest as the TVs on the boat tend to play Vietnamese movies at eardrum perforating levels for the entirety of the journey.

I love the smells of a night market, cooking, spices and so many random things on sale! Thanks Claire, it was my favourite photo too - He looked over just at the right time! As I am vegetarian so if I get vegetarian food then I can try street food at Can Tho.

My base for Mui Ne Was Mui Ne Backpackers Resort which was clean, comfortable and had a pool. This quaint little town got under my skin so much that I extended my stay here! I'll throw it out there, I wasn't a huge fan of Hanoi - it was a massively busy city and after some amazing experiences in Hoi An and Dalat it was never really going to measure up!

The weather wasn't ideal and the boat trip I booked lacked the atmosphere I was hoping for - not to mention the terrible food. I've heard some amazing things about Sappa though and there are some great hikes and homestays to be done in the area if that's your thing - the photos I've seen of the rice terraces are incredible! If you want to get off the beaten track my buddy Connor spent some serious time right in the North of Vietnam near the China border and he freaking loved it and came back with some stunning photographs of the lakes, waterfalls and landscapes up there.

I've previously travelled (and lived in a few of those) Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Cambodia along with large chunks of Europe and Northern America. I'd picked vietnam travel because I can combine it with Thailand which I know she'll love, and because of the ease with which you can get from place to place on the reunification line. Hopefully we'll have a brilliant time though!

I hope this Backpackers Guide to Hanoi will help you out! Many an hour went into the planning of our two week itinerary - I scoured google, consulted travel blogs, asked various friends that I knew had been for advice, searched #vietnam on Instagram …the list is endless. This cost £520 but we booked pretty last minute i.e. 1 month before!

We did the boat trip to the floating markets in the morning. Having said that though, the homestay was really cool so if you have time I would definitely recommend! There is the option of an overnight bus (this goes through Nha Trang with the option of getting off for a night or two) and takes around 19 hours overall.
